Ken Griffin Gives $500,000 to Pro-Rahm Emanuel PAC

Citadel hedge-fund founder Ken Griffin is backing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's reelection campaign in a big way. Griffin has given $500,000 to pro-Emanuel PAC "Chicago Forward."

The donation to the political action committee is a sizeable offer in what has turned into an unexpectedly competitive Mayoral election.

Emanuel, who is seeking his second term in the Windy City, was unable to secure 50% of the primary vote last month. That has forced him into a runoff against a more progressive challenger named Jesus "Chuy" Garcia.

Griffin’s half-million-dollar bump to Emanuel’s PAC is double what he donated just weeks ago after the primary election. The hedge fund manager donated $250,000, padding the committee’s advertising budget ahead of the hotly contested runoff on April 7.

Griffin has been a significant donor to both political parties in Illinois. He was the largest donor to Gov. Bruce Rauner election campaign in 2014. That included an $8 million donation to Rauner after the election to help the government battle against the Illinois Legislature over policy changes.

Griffin has also contributed to the campaigns of Repubican politicians and conservative leaning groups.

Campaigns include Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), and Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.). Schock resigned from Congress this week after questions were raised about his spending practices of public funds.

Conservative groups that received funding from Griffin include American Crossroads, America Rising, and the Republican National Committee.
