Rand Paul Campaign Names Universa's Spitznagel to Economic Advisor Post

Kentucky senator and Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul has appointed hedge fund manager Mark Spitznagel as a senior economic advisor.

The founder of Universa Investments reportedly shares a number of economic philosophies with Paul, including the role of government in the private sector and the financial markets. His hedge fund manages $6 billion, according to the New York Times.

Senator Paul ascribes to libertarian policies that support a hands-off approach to government regulation of financial markets, a stance welcomed by many hedge fund managers.

For his part, Spitznagel describes Senator Paul as the only presidential candidate who understands the allegedly destructive ramifications of Federal Reserve policy.

An ardent believer in the Austrian school of economics, he has repeatedly argued against the wisdom of quantitative easing by central banks, saying they merely prolong the inevitable and set the stage for greater market setbacks down the road.

“As I travel across the country, the top concern of the American people is our failing economy,” Sen. Paul said in a written statement. “I look forward to working alongside Mark to solve our nation’s economic problem and to restore the American dream,” he added.
