Diversified alternative asset manager BlueMountain Capital Management has named former BlackRock executive Lee Kempler to the position of chief operating officer for investments.

Kempler joined the firm effective June 12, the company said. In his new role, which is new, Kempler will focus on further developing BlueMountain’s collaboration and knowledge sharing process among the firm's Co-CIOs, portfolio managers, and risk managers, as well as enhancing the communication of investment strategies to BlueMountain's clients.

Prior to joining BlueMountain, Kempler was a managing director at BlackRock, where he was the founding executive director of the BlackRock Investment Institute. In his role at BlackRock, he established an industry-leading platform for collaboration among portfolio managers and communication of investment insight to clients and was instrumental in the firm’s initiatives to establish and share best practices in investment process. Beforehand, he spent nearly 25 years at McKinsey & Company serving clients in financial services and becoming the firm’s first director of knowledge with responsibility for capturing, codifying, and disseminating the firm’s intellectual property.

“Lee brings more than 30 years of experience building and enhancing best practices at top financial firms,” said BlueMountain co-founder Stephen Siderow, who worked together with Kempler when he was at McKinsey, in a statement. “His expertise and intellect will drive further collaboration and integration across our investment teams and increase the value BlueMountain delivers to our clients.”

New York-based BlueMountain Capital Management was founded in 2003 by Siderow and former JP Morgan executive Andrew Feldstein. The company is a multi-strategy absolute return manager with more than $22 billion in AUM deployed across credit, distressed, special situation, equity, structured finance and technical/arbitrage strategies.
