The Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association has announced the formation of a chapter in Italy the organization’s thirtieth chapter in total and its tenth in Europe.

CAIA Italy will be based in Milan, according to a statement. As with its peer chapters around the world, it will promote networking initiatives and educational events open to CAIA members, candidates and financial professionals in the Italian marketplace interested in alternative investments.

“As one of the largest economies in the Eurozone, Italy is a key market for many investors and one where alternative investments such as hedge funds, private equity, real estate and infrastructure are continuing to join the mainstream,” said William Kelly, CEO of CAIA, in the statement.

“One of the first countries in the European Union to regulate hedge funds, Italy has experienced considerable expansion in its alternative investment industry, which now encompasses a wide variety of strategies that attract both institutional and private investors,” added Laura Merlini, Managing Director for EMEA at CAIA. “In particular, pension funds’ allocations to alternatives has increased in number and size, creating an excellent local pool of educated, talented and specialized professionals on both the sell and buy side.”

Chapter head for the new location will be Lorenzo Piacentini, senior vice president at Lazard Fund Managers. He is joined by several chapter executives Paolo Viale of Winton, Antonio Forte of LionTrust Asset Management, Gianluca Moretti of SPAFID; Luca Anzola of Gestioni, and Stefan Gess of Banca IMI.

Founded in 2002, the CAIA Association is best known for the CAIA Charter, an internationally recognized credential granted to those in the institutional alternative investments industry upon successful completion of a rigorous two-level exam series and accumulation of relevant work experience.

The association is comprised of more than 9,000 alternative investment professionals located in almost 90 countries across 30 chapters. The association sponsors more than 250 high-quality educational and networking event opportunities annually and has academic partnerships with more than 60 top universities and associations in financial centers around the world.
